Anthony Russell is in prison serving a whole life order — the most severe sentence available in England and Wales — for the murders of three people in Coventry in 2020. In March 2026, he was further charged with the murder of notorious child killer Ian Huntley at HMP Frankland, making him one of the most dangerous inmates in the British prison system.
Who Is Anthony Russell?
Anthony Russell, born on 16 April 1982, is a convicted triple murderer and rapist from Coventry. He is described by the courts as an exceptionally dangerous individual with a history of serious violence. Prior to his 2020 killing spree, Russell had previous contact with police and was known to misuse heroin. At the time of the murders, he was 38 years old.
Since his conviction in 2022, Russell has been held in high-security custody. In early 2026, he came to international attention again when he was charged with the murder of Soham killer Ian Huntley at HMP Frankland — one of England’s most secure Category A prisons, located in County Durham.
The Coventry Murders: Three Victims in Seven Days
In October 2020, Russell killed three people in a sustained killing spree that lasted seven days in and around Coventry and Warwickshire.
His first victim was David Williams, whom Russell murdered because he mistakenly believed Williams was in a relationship with Russell’s girlfriend. He strangled David Williams with a lanyard and concealed the body under a bed, where it was discovered five days later by police, bearing 87 separate injuries.
His second victim was Julie Williams, David’s mother. Russell killed her because he feared she knew too much and might speak to police. When her body was found, she had sustained 113 separate injuries and had suffered significant trauma to the head and neck.
His third victim was Nicole McGregor, a 31-year-old pregnant woman who was 18 weeks into her pregnancy. Russell lured her to Newbold Comyn near Leamington Spa under the pretence of offering her drugs, before murdering and raping her, leaving her body in woodland.
Russell was arrested on 30 October 2020, after police discovered him sleeping in a stolen Ford C-Max on a road near Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire. CCTV footage played a significant role in gathering the evidence that led to his arrest and subsequent conviction.
Conviction and Whole Life Order
Russell faced trial at Birmingham Crown Court, where on 10 March 2022, a jury found him guilty of all three murders as well as the rape of Nicole McGregor. He was sentenced on 11 March 2022 to a whole life order for the murders.
A whole life order means Russell will never be considered for parole or release. It is the most severe sentence a court in England and Wales can impose and is reserved for the most serious cases, including those involving multiple murders, sexual violence against children, or acts of terrorism. At sentencing, Mr Justice Wall described Russell as an “exceptionally dangerous” and manipulative individual whose crimes were characterised by “very significant violence.”

The Killing of Ian Huntley at HMP Frankland
Ian Huntley was one of Britain’s most notorious convicted killers. He was jailed for life in 2003 for the murders of schoolgirls Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in Soham, Cambridgeshire. He was held at HMP Frankland — the same high-security prison as Anthony Russell.
On 26 February 2026, Huntley was attacked in the prison workshop at HMP Frankland with an improvised weapon, sustaining severe head injuries. He was removed from life support on 6 March 2026 and died the following morning at the age of 52. Reports at the time indicated that a fellow inmate had been heard shouting “I have done it” after the attack.
On 10 March 2026, the Crown Prosecution Service announced that Anthony Russell, 43, had been charged with the murder of Ian Huntley. He appeared at Teesside Crown Court on 12 March 2026 for a preliminary hearing, where he did not enter a plea. A pre-trial preparation hearing was scheduled at Newcastle Crown Court for 24 April 2026.
Ian Huntley’s inquest was formally opened on 27 March 2026, the day before this article was published.
Current Legal Status in 2026
Anthony Russell remains in custody at HMP Frankland, serving his whole life order for the three 2020 murders. He additionally faces a separate murder charge for the killing of Ian Huntley and is awaiting trial on that charge. If convicted of Huntley’s murder, that conviction would be added to his existing sentence — though as he already holds a whole life order, it would have no practical effect on his release prospects, as he has none.
The case is an extremely rare instance of one convicted murderer killing another inside a high-security prison setting. To understand more about how high-security prisons operate in the UK, read our guide on finding a prisoner in the UK.
