Key Point: You can book a prison visit through the official HM Prison Service portal or by contacting the prison directly. Most prisons require advance notice of 24 to 7 days, depending on the establishment's security level. You'll need approved visitor status and valid identification to attend.

Step 1: Confirm the Prisoner's Details

Before booking anything, you need to know the prisoner's full name, prison number (if available), and current establishment. If you're not sure, ring the prison directly. The staff there are accustomed to these queries and will help you locate the person you're visiting.

Step 2: Check If You're an Approved Visitor

The prisoner must have nominated you as an approved visitor. If you've never visited before, the prisoner needs to add your name to their visiting list. This typically happens through a form they complete whilst in prison, or by phone if the prison allows.

Step 3: Register for an Account on the Prison Booking System

Most UK prisons now use an online booking platform. You'll need to:

Step 4: Select Your Visit Date and Time

Once registered, you can browse available visit slots. Most prisons offer visits Thursday to Sunday, though this varies by establishment. You'll typically need to book at least 24 hours in advance, sometimes up to 7 days.

Step 5: Confirm Your Booking

You'll receive a confirmation email with your visit details. Print this or save it on your phone—you may need to present it at the gate. The confirmation will include:

You Can Bring: Valid photo ID (required) Visit confirmation email/printout House keys A small amount of cash (typically £10–£20 for vending machines; cards are not accepted in visit halls) You Cannot Bring: Mobile phones or recording devices Food, drinks, or sweets (except for vending machine purchases) Weapons, drugs, or alcohol Excessive jewellery or valuables Prohibited items specific to that prison (check the website) Dress Code and Behaviour While there's no strict uniform requirement, most prisons expect visitors to dress smartly. Here's what works: Smart-casual clothing (trousers or skirt, shirt, jumper) Avoid low-cut tops, see-through clothing, or swimwear Wear closed-toe shoes Minimal jewellery (security concern) Behave respectfully during your visit. Prison officers monitor visit halls, and aggressive, abusive, or disruptive behaviour can result in removal and bans from future visits. Arrival and Security Procedures Arrive 15 minutes early. You'll go through a security check similar to an airport: Show your ID and visit confirmation Pass through a metal detector Officers may search your belongings You'll be scanned with a body scanner (or patted down) Once cleared, you'll be directed to the visit hall. Wait for the prisoner to be brought in—this usually takes a few minutes. Common Issues and How to Handle Them Visit Cancelled Last Minute

Sometimes, prisons cancel visits due to security incidents or emergencies. It's frustrating, but it happens. If your visit is cancelled:

You've Missed Your Visit Slot

If you're running late, ring the prison immediately. Many won't admit visitors after the session has started, but some will accommodate you if you ring ahead.

Visitor Status Removed or Refused

If your visiting status is removed (often due to security concerns or rule violations), you have the right to challenge this. Request a formal explanation and consider appealing to the prison's governing governor.

Extended Visits for Vulnerable Families

Some prisons offer longer visits for families with young children or vulnerable individuals. Speak to the establishment about this if it applies to your situation.

Video Visits (Enhanced Visits)

Many prisons now offer video visiting for additional convenience. This is separate from in-person visits and can be booked through the same system. Learn more about video visits here.

Release on Temporary Licence (ROTL) Visits

For prisoners nearing release, some prisons allow temporary outside visits. These are arranged separately and offer more freedom.
