Getting Beaten Up In Prison

Everyone has the stereotype that if you are weak in prison and don’t know how to handle yourself, you’ll get beaten up in prison.

Trouble doesn’t come looking for you in prison, well rarely! If you keep yourself to yourself and don’t get involved in business that isn’t yours or get involved in gangs, drugs, debt or take things that aren’t yours then you shouldn’t get yourself into any unwanted trouble within Prison.

Remember, you start from the bottom and make your way through the prison system. You usually start in an induction wing, so everyone on that wing will be relatively new and probably feeling the same as you, yes there will be some veterans in for another stretch but there are also others who feeling exactly the same as you!

Even though most probably won’t show it, they share the same apprehension and emotions as you! Most fights I witnessed in prison was due to something being stolen, issues from outside of the prison, arguments that spill over or built up anger after patience has worn thin. Rarely did I see any violence which was a random attack.

At the same time, do yourself some favours. Don’t walk round like a deer in the headlights. Hold your head up, at least have some presence on the wing, a few friendly ‘hello’s’ or ‘alright mates’ as you walk past people on the landings will help people get the flavour of the character that you are.

Regardless of crime or whether you feel hard done by, guilty or not guilty we’ve all ended up in the same place and all want the same end goal, to serve our time as comfortably and quickly as possible and get home.
