Guys marsh prison was originally opened as a borstal in 1960 and then transformed into a YOI in 1984. 1992 it was changed again into an adults prison before becoming a Cat C prison in 2008 accommodating life serving prisoners.
Guys marsh is operated by HMPS and can hold upto 396 male adult prisoners and is in the south west region. Guys Marsh has 7 units which have cellular accommodation and one unit with less security.
Workshops available at Guys Marsh prison for the prisoners include farms, estates management, laundry, industrial cleaning, bricklaying and contract production workshops.

You can visit the prison between Friday and Sunday at 1:30 to 3:45.
To be able to book a visit you need to do this online here: www.gov.uk/prison-visits. You will need the prisoners number, visitor details and you will be required to bring ID and proof of address when you arrive.
You should get a confirmation email within a few working days of your booking. You can also email and call the prison: [email protected] or call 01747 856586, lines open Mon-Thurs 13.00-15.00 and Fri 11.30-13.00.
Guys marsh prison has lockers on site that you will be required to leave your belongings on entry to the prison. You can take upto £30 with you into the visit hall but you will not be allowed to take notes, only change. This is to stop money being taken back into the prison. There are baby changing facilities on site.
The prison itself is in quite a rural location, 2 miles from Shaftesbury. However its about 45 mins walk from Shaftesbury town. You will be best to get a taxi if getting a train at the nearest station which is Gillingham.

If driving to the prison, Use the B3091 to Sturminster newton road, its 2 miles from the town centre of Shaftesbury. Use the A30 Salisbury to Yeovil road, A350 to poole road. You can park at Guys Marsh Prison.
