Prison Officers – What are prison officers and Prison Officer Jobs

Prison Officers – Prison Officers, Guards, Screws, are the ones that are in charge and have a duty of care for you whilst you are incarcerated.

Depending on what type of officer you get, depends on the level of prison service you get. The old school officers are like old army sergeants, the newer fresher ones are more empathetic and still trying to do a good job as it will help ‘reduce reoffending’. Even the new ones are turned by the old ones eventually and end up falling for old habits and shortcuts.

You will hear a lot of prisoners shouting at the officers to do something for them by barking ‘Guv’ a million times, most officers are referred to as Guv when speaking to them, it’s strange at first but you get used to it.

There is also a hierarchy of officer, from a normal officer, to an SO (Supervising Officer) who have a little bit more power and boss the officers around and then a CM (Custodial Manager) who will oversee the wing, the wing governor and then the prison governor.

It’s always good to have a friendly officer in your pocket for signing off your applications, so even if you don’t like the prison officers and want to maintain that traditional them and us stance, at least try and befriend one, you’ll probably need them at some point.
