What is the prison cell like? Want to know what a prison cell is like in the UK?

Its minimal at best, usually has a bunk bed attached to the wall, a few cupboards screwed to the wall, a kettle, TV and most have a sink and toilet behind the bunk bed. The bed itself is uncomfortable and the thin, well used, prison mattress (like a gym crash matt) takes some getting used to. I put my towels and sheets under the mattress to plump it up. It can feel claustrophobic at first as you get used to the 6ft by 8ft space and going to the toilet with someone in the same room can feel odd at first, but something you have no choice over. You will learn to adapt to sleep in whatever environment!

You get into a routine and learn to respect each other’s privacy, remember most people on the induction wing are also new to prison, yes a big proportion would have been to prison previously, but you are all new in to the establishment so you are not a fish out of water here.

The cell will probably have one small window and the big blue door that gets locked behind you. Getting used to not being able to go anywhere, being without your loved ones and having no freedom does get some time to get used to.

Depending on the establishment and if you’re lucky enough, the cell will have an in cell phone so that you can call home. Upon arrival to the prison you should have also been given emergency phone credit which contains about £5 of phone credit so that you can call home.

The image below is quite a good representative of what a typical single cell is like in an establishment such as Wandsworth Prison UK. Bare in mind that it is quite rare to get a single prison cell in such an overcrowded establishment, as they all are.
