What kind of prison is Coldingley?
Coldingley was purpose-built in 1969 as an experiment: a prison organised around a full industrial working week, so that men left with a work record and habits employers recognise. More than fifty years on, that identity survives. Most prisoners are expected to work, and the workshops operate on something closer to commercial lines than at most jails. The prison has been overcrowded in recent years — the Independent Monitoring Board reported in 2025 that dozens of single cells had been doubled up and extra rapid-deployment cells added, which puts pressure on showers, kitchens and activity places.
What did the latest inspection find?
HM Inspectorate of Prisons inspected Coldingley in November 2025 (report published February 2026). The concerns were familiar ones for the Cat C estate: drugs too easily available, too much serious violence, and weak attendance at work and education. But inspectors also found real strengths — 80% of prisoners said staff treated them with respect, an unusually high figure, and leaders had clear priorities. The commercial laundry handles outside contracts, and the print shop — refitted at a cost of around £5 million — produces professional print work alongside sign-making, engineering, recycling and horticulture. Men can earn recognised qualifications through these industries, and substance misuse support is provided by the Forward Trust.
