High Down Prison

High down prison is a old mental hospital and changed in 1992 as a prison. High Down Prison covers the Guildford and Croydon area for magistrates courts. It originally took just A cat prisoners but changed in 2002 to cat B prisoners.

High down used to only hold 747 prisoners but in 2009 it expanded with two new blocks which means it can now house 1203 prisoners. The prison may soon also hold cat c prisoners, the prison is probably best known for the ‘Clink’ Restuarant which opened its doors in 2009. The Clink gives prisoners the opportunity to work in a variety of roles and with the public offered hospitality/food services.

Accommodation

House blocks 1–6 house hold around 200 prisoners each.

  • Houseblock 1 – general houseblock with protective isolation unit
  • Houseblock 2 – includes reverse cohort unit for the general population
  • Houseblock 3 – general houseblock
  • Houseblock 4 – substance misuse treatment unit with reverse cohort unit for prisoners undergoing treatment on arrival
  • Houseblock 5 – general houseblock
  • Houseblock 6 – vulnerable prisoners’ unit with reverse cohort unit for new arrivals from this population.
  • Health care inpatient unit – Has 22 beds.
  • Segregation unit – Capacity for 23 prisoners.

To book a visit at HMP High Down Prison you need to book online here  www.gov.uk/prison-visits.

The visiting times for the prison is
Tue: 9-11am HB6 only, 2-4pm Wed: 9-11am HB6 only, 2-4pm, Thu: 9-11am HB6 only, 2-4pm Sat & Sun: 2-4pm

To be able to book a visit you will need the name, Prison number and DOB of the prisoner that you are visiting. You will need to bring ID with you when visiting the prison and also a utility bill. You will be given a Visiting order number which you should receive through email after you’ve booked your visit. You will also need to bring this with you on your visit.

You should receive this within 1-3 working days of booking your visit. If not email [email protected] or phone on 020 7147 6570. You can also book visits on this number (0207 147 6570), it is open Monday to Friday: 09:00 – 12:00 and 13.15 – 16.30 and Saturday & Sunday: 08:15 – 12.00

The visitors centre at High Down Prison does have lockers. You will be required to put all of your personal belongings, mobile phones, food and drink into the lockers before entering the visiting hall. You can take change only by coins into the prison to buy you and the prisoner snacks and drinks from the kiosk.

High down prison is located 14 miles south of London near Sutton. If you are looking to get the bus to the prison, the number 80 bus from morden station on the northern line.

If getting a train, Sutton or Belmont stations is a short taxi ride from the prison.

To get there by car, M25 junction 8.

There is limited parking at the prison.
