What kind of prison is Lindholme?
Lindholme took its first prisoners in November 1985, reusing buildings from the old RAF station near Hatfield Woodhouse, and the airfield layout still shapes the jail: it is a big, spread-out site by prison standards. As a Category C trainer holding only men with four years or more to serve, its job is progression — getting men through offending behaviour work, education and employment training before release or a move to open conditions.
What did inspectors find?
The most recent full inspection, in July 2023, found a prison struggling on several fronts: a serious and poorly coordinated drugs problem (around half of prisoners said drugs were easy to get), drones delivering contraband, staff shortages, and weak release planning for higher-risk men. A follow-up Independent Review of Progress in May 2024 was blunt — the three biggest concerns had not been gripped, and the random drug-test positive rate had worsened to around 40%, one of the highest in the country. Families should not panic at those headlines: most men at Lindholme get on with their sentence without incident, but the drug economy is real and worth talking about honestly with your loved one. Daily life, work and education
Lindholme’s activity list is genuinely broad. Education runs from literacy, numeracy and ESOL through GCSE English and maths, with IT, business administration and media and graphic design on top. Vocational training includes printing, engineering, forklift truck driving, plumbing, carpentry, textiles, catering, barbering, plastering, painting and decorating, and hospitality, plus gym qualifications. There is a substance misuse programme and housing support from Shelter before release. Each man gets an individual learning plan — the challenge, inspectors say, has been making sure workshops actually run consistently.
