When I was looking at facing a prison sentence I worried about what it would be like being with so many other people that just weren’t like me, hardened criminals that would eat me up for breakfast. I dreaded the thought of having to shower for the first time inside a prison with all the stories you here. I was also an extremely fussy eater and how would I survive on prison food and what would I eat? How would it be leaving my loved ones behind and how would they survive without me.

The biggest thing to deal with in prison is boredom. Yes, prison can be a big old scary place but once you find your feet and know your routine to be able to get by from one day to the next, its all about passing time. Rarely are you actually targeted randomly inside prison by other inmates, don’t forget we are all in the same boat. Yes, some want to take advantage more than other, schemers and people that don’t have anything so would rather take but if you keep yourself to yourself, you normally go undetected.

The main cause of issues in prison is debt, getting into debt through drugs or things on the canteen sheet or the not settling your debts with the unofficial inside prison shop. Also gangs, if your from a certain area or postcode from London and involved in the gang culture, this normally follows inside prison too.

First Time In Prison

If this is the first time in prison you will feel like a fish out of water and that you don’t belong there. You need to try shake this feeling as soon as possible. I felt like I was better than most in there but regardless of crime, we’ve all been through the ringer, ended up in the same place and are all trying to get to the same result, the end of our sentences. There will be other people in there like you and it wont take you long to resonate towards your own crowd, you also find they scout you out also. If your going to prison for a white collar crime there also seems to be an unofficial white collar club inside which you’ll be inducted to pretty quickly.

First time prisoners usually go into an induction wing at the prison, its pretty grim and youll be quickly moved on, but remember, as its an induction wing, everyone else on that wing is new there too. It gives you time to settle, find your feet, get used to doing nothing and take in your new surroundings. It can be loud, smelly and frustrating as it takes a while to get your money on, limited phone credit and you’ll feel like your hands are tied all of a sudden.

Patience is key, your going nowhere quick so just prepare that the first couple of weeks will be a bit uneasy, a bit annoying but know after the induction wing youll be moved to a more permanent cell with a more suitable cell mate.
