Prison Reception - What happens when you first arrive at prison
What happens when you first get to prison?
At the prison reception when you first arrive, you will have your photo taken, medical assessment, property stored and youll be provided with prison clothing. These normally consist of grey jogging bottoms, grey or blue and grey tshirt. They are normally not in good condition but you better get used to these clothes until you get to enhanced status where you will get your own clothes.
The nurse/doctor will also see you to assess if you are taking any medication, any risks whilst you are in prison or health issues they should know about. The prison officer will ask you a few questions too about your well being, any safer custody issues and if you would like a reception pack either smokers or non smokers. Smokers you get a vape and vape capsules, non smokers you get biscuits, milk, chocolate, coffee etc to keep you going until you have your own money and order from the canteen. Id highly recommend taking it.

You may be asked to strip and do a spin to ensure you are not conceiling anything to take into the prison. If they suspect something more they may ask you to sit on the scanning chair which can see if you are hiding anything internally.
After youve been processed at prison reception, they will then escort you to the prison wing and into your first cell and to meet your first cell mate.
The officers are mindful of who they put you with and even for their own workload, would rather put you with someone suitable then someone thats going to cause you and them issues. Remember, when you first get to prison, you will normally be put on the induction wing, so your first cell mate would also probably have just arrived. So as daunting as it is for you to meet them, the feeling is probably mutual.
Once youve found your feet and normally the next day, go about getting the right forms completed and submitted. Including the permitted vistors form, adding people to your pin phone so that you can call them and get to the phone if your cell doesnt have an incell phone.
When you get to prison you are also given an emergency pin phone credit with about £5 on it. You can call whoever you want without them having to be preauthorised on the system. This is affectively your prison reception calls. After this credit has dried up, you will need to add credit to your pin and have the numbers authorised for you to dial out on.
Prison Reception Visits: If you have just arrived at the prison, get your family or friends to ring the prison and ask for a prison reception visit as youve just got there, they will not be on the system. They will be required to show identification when they arrive, i would take 2 forms and some utility bills.
After the prison reception visit, they will also need to be authorised on your system to be able to book a visit using your prison number, name and date of birth. You can give this to them after you arrive at prison and youll receive this at prison reception.
