HMP Swaleside
HMP Swaleside is a Category B training prison located on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent, specifically in Eastchurch. This facility primarily holds adult male inmates serving sentences of four years or more. It is part of the Sheppey Cluster, which includes two other prisons: HMP Elmley and HMP Standford Hill. As of February 3rd, 2010, HMP Swaleside had a capacity of 1112 inmates.
Visiting Information for HMP Swaleside
Visits to HMP Swaleside can be booked online at www.gov.uk/prison-visits. The required information includes the name and date of birth of the person being visited, along with their prisoner number. Visitors can choose up to three possible dates and times, and the prison booking staff will confirm the visit via email. Alternatively, visits can also be booked by phone, using the booking line number 0300 060 6604, which operates from 09:00 – 12:00 & 12:30 – 16:00 seven days a week. All visits must be booked at least one day in advance.
Visiting Times
Visits are held daily from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
Identification and Security
Visitors must provide two forms of identification, one of which must be a photo ID, and at least one should show the current home address. Acceptable forms of ID include a passport, driving licence, or Citizencard. Visitors will also need to register on the visitor’s system and undergo security checks, including metal detection and possibly screening by drug detection dogs.
Travel to HMP Swaleside
For those travelling by public transport, bus services to the prison are irregular. There are services to the village of Eastchurch, about a mile from the prison. Train services are available from London Victoria to Sittingbourne with a connecting train to Sheerness. Taxis are available from the station, approximately 8 miles from the prison. For those travelling by car, directions involve taking the M20 or the M2, with clear signposting to the prison, where car parking is available.
