HMP Fosse Way
HMP Fosse Way is a significant addition to the UK’s prison infrastructure, located in Leicester, Leicestershire. This Category C prison, designed for male inmates, represents a substantial investment in the justice system, with its construction costing £286 million. Managed by HM Prison Services and operated by Serco under a ten-year contract, HMP Fosse Way began receiving prisoners on 29 May 2023.
The prison stands on the site of the former HM Prison Glen Parva, which closed in 2017. In August 2022, a proposal to expand the prison to accommodate an additional 250 inmates was announced, and this expansion was approved in December 2022. Once fully operational, HMP Fosse Way will have a planned capacity of 1,930 inmates.

As a Category C prison, HMP Fosse Way houses prisoners who cannot be trusted in open conditions but who are considered unlikely to try to escape. The environment in such a facility is less restrictive than in higher-category prisons, with more opportunities for prisoners to associate with each other and engage in prison-run activities. The aim is to prepare inmates for eventual release and reintegration into society.
