What is Birmingham Prison Like? Birmingham Prison is a B Cat Mens Prison situation in Birmingham with a capacity of 1849 prisoners.
It is an old victorian style prison very much like wandsworth prison.
Most prisoners end up in Birmingham Prison from the Birmingham Crown and Magistrates courts and even Shrewsbury, Lichfield, Tamworth, Sutton Coldfield , Dudley and Telford.
The prison dates back to 1849 and was run by G4S before returning back to HMPPS in 2018.
Originally the prison was called Winson Green Prison and was designed by DR Hill who also did the designs for All saints hospital.

The nearest train station is Birmingham New Street Station but is still around 5 miles. You will need to complete the rest of the journey by Taxi or Bus.
If coming by car, from the north use the M6 Jnct 8. From the South use Junct 8 South bound.
From the west use M5 Junc 1.
