To be able to contact a prisoner, you will need their prison number, prison address and name of prisoner. You can then send them a letter. If you would rather speak on the phone to the prisoner, they will need to add your telephone number and have it preapproved on the prison PIN phone system. This will then give them authority to be able to contact you by telephone. The credit will then come off their prison phone which they will need to keep topped up. Call price is around 16p per minute for a mobile call and around 6p per minute off peak for a landline call.

If you need to contact a prisoner in case of an emergency or family issue and its important to get in contact with the prisoner immediately, i would suggest to contact the prison and ask to speak to the Prison Chaplain who may be able to get a message to the prisoner quicker than writing or waiting for the prisoner to call next.
